Creamy and sweet
Khadlaj Island is a tropical extrait de parfum: pineapple, iris, ginger and cypress over coconut and woody notes, with amber, tonka and sandalwood in the base. Khadlaj describes the sandalwood trail as creamy and woody. Khadlaj Panache Angel Dust puts sandalwood in the heart with tuberose and rum, over vanilla, whipped cream, benzoin and musk, and Khadlaj sells it as a women's evening perfume. Lattafa Bade'e Al Oud Honor & Glory is the spiced option, with pineapple and crème brûlée over cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper and benzoin, settling on vanilla, sandalwood, cashmeran and moss.
Woody and fresh
Paris Corner Rich Santal Emir Factory Edition takes its name from santal, French for sandalwood. Cardamom, violet and papyrus lead into iris and amber, then leather, sandalwood and cedarwood, and Paris Corner describes a warm, woody drydown that stays close to the skin. Khadlaj Shiyaaka Silver, sold by Khadlaj as Shiyaaka for Men, opens with orange, herbal and floral notes, turns balsamic and spicy, and rests on violet, musk, sandalwood and cedarwood. Rose and oud
In Arabian perfumery, sandalwood is a frequent partner for rose and oud. Ard Al Zaafaran Dirham Oud is an inexpensive way to try the trio. Fragrantica lists citrus, bergamot and raspberry up top, sandalwood, rose and lavender in the heart, and oud, amber, cedar, white musk and woody notes in the base.
Perfume oils and attars
Sandalwood oil is the traditional base of Indian attars. In Kannauj, flowers, herbs and spices are still distilled into it in copper stills, and the sandalwood holds and fixes the scent. Khadlaj Hareem Al Sultan Silver is a rose oil: bergamot, rose and white musk over rosemary and ylang-ylang, on sandalwood, amber and frankincense, and Khadlaj says it can be worn on skin and hair. What does sandalwood smell like?
Sandalwood smells soft, creamy and woody, often described as milky, with a gentle sweetness. It is smooth rather than smoky, sits in the base of a perfume, wears close to the skin and works as a fixative, rounding out florals, citrus, oud and musk.
Is the sandalwood in perfume real?
Brands rarely say. Indian sandalwood (Santalum album), historically from around Mysore in southern India, gives the classic rich, buttery oil, but overharvesting has made it scarce and India controls it tightly. Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), from Western Australia, is now a major source and is usually described as fresher and drier. Most modern perfumes rely largely on synthetic sandalwood molecules, such as Javanol and Ebanol, sometimes with a little natural oil, so at these prices, expect mostly synthetic sandalwood.
Should I choose a sandalwood spray or a perfume oil?
Choose a spray, an eau de parfum or extrait de parfum, if you want the scent to carry further. Choose a perfume oil if you prefer no alcohol and a scent that stays close to you, which suits sandalwood's soft character. You can also dab on an oil and spray over it.
