Amber is a warm, resinous style that runs through Arabian perfumery, and the name can mislead. In perfume, amber is not the fossil tree resin used in jewellery. It is an accord: a blend that perfumers usually build from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, and it smells warm, slightly sweet and a little powdery. These are the amber perfumes we would reach for first on our shelves in Canada, grouped by style, with the notes each house lists. All ten were in stock at the time of writing, in October 2026, at the prices shown. Two of them, Qadr and Safi, are our own extraits de parfum, mixed by our founder, Aymane Zerzkhane, the king of Arabian fragrance mixing, and we label them wherever they appear.
Quick answer
For a classic spiced amber, start with Qadr, our own extrait de parfum, or Lattafa Asad. For a sweeter vanilla amber, try Afnan 9 PM or Khadlaj Island Vanilla Dunes. For amber with tobacco, oud or iris, try Assaf Tobacco Jam 50, Lattafa Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst or Reef 29. For a fresh, salty ambergris style, try Lattafa Atlas. For a light amber you can wear in summer, try Safi, our own citrus extrait. For a perfume oil, try Naseem Bushra.

Spiced amber
Qadr, our own extrait de parfum, is built from the materials behind a classic amber accord. It opens on cardamom, saffron, boozy notes and smoky cade, moves through cistus, suede, benzoin and coffee, and settles on tonka, vanilla, labdanum, guaiac wood and amberwood. Read what Qadr smells like for more. Lattafa Asad, which Lattafa describes as an amber fragrance for men, layers black pepper, tobacco and pineapple over patchouli, coffee and iris, then dries down to vanilla, amber, dry wood, benzoin and labdanum. Naseem Bushra is the perfume oil option: lemon and clary sage over cardamom, praline and cinnamon, with musk, amber and patchouli underneath.
Vanilla and gourmand amber
Afnan 9 PM is the sweeter, fruitier option. Afnan lists bergamot, lavandin, cinnamon and apple on top, lily of the valley and orange blossom in the heart, and patchouli, amber, vanilla and tonka bean in the base. Fragrantica lists vanilla and amber as its strongest accords. It suits evenings out. Khadlaj Island Vanilla Dunes lists amber twice: dry amber in a heart of orange blossom and guaiac wood, then amber again with vanilla and praline in the base. Lavender, bergamot and cardamom on top keep it from turning sugary.
Woody, tobacco and oud amber
Assaf Tobacco Jam 50 puts amber at its centre. Assaf says amber and patchouli dominate the heart, after an opening of bergamot and lavender, with vanilla and tobacco in the base. It suits evenings and cooler weather. Lattafa Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst sets amber beside rose and oud: pink pepper and bergamot over Turkish rose, Bulgarian rose and jasmine, on oud, amber and vanilla. Reef 29 has the simplest pyramid here. Reef lists only saffron, iris and ambergris, and describes powdery iris settling into a warm amber base. Fresh and ambergris-style amber
Amber does not have to be heavy. Ambergris-style perfumes trade resin for a salty, mineral warmth. Lattafa Atlas opens on salt, sea notes and lemon, moves through iris and davana, and dries down to ambergris, sandalwood and oakmoss, so it reads salty and mineral rather than sweet. For a light amber you can wear in summer, Safi, our own, opens on lemon, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange over Mediterranean fruit, with amber, Madagascar vanilla and white musk underneath.
How to choose an amber perfume
- Pick the mood. Spice and coffee make amber darker, vanilla and praline make it sweeter, tobacco and oud make it woodier, and citrus or sea notes make it lighter.
- Think about the season. Resinous ambers suit Canadian fall and winter. For warm days, choose Atlas or Safi, our own.
- Choose a format. Sprays carry further, while perfume oils such as Bushra sit closer to the skin. An extrait de parfum holds more perfume oil than an eau de parfum, and our own extraits come with a 10 to 12 hour longevity guarantee.
- Smell before you commit. Our own Qadr and Safi each have a 5 ml tester for CA$7.99, and testers for many of the others are available at our Oakville Place store.
FAQ
What does amber smell like in perfume?
Warm, resinous and slightly sweet, often with a soft, powdery edge. Amber in perfume is an accord rather than a single ingredient, usually built from labdanum, a resin from the rockrose shrub, with benzoin and vanilla. It is not made from the fossil tree resin used in jewellery. Qadr, our own, and Lattafa Asad both list labdanum and benzoin, so either is a good way to learn the smell.
Is amber the same as ambergris?
No. Ambergris is a different material: a waxy substance that forms in the digestive system of sperm whales, with a salty, mineral character. Today perfumers mostly use synthetic replacements such as ambroxan. Of the picks here, Lattafa Atlas and Reef 29 list ambergris.
Are amber perfumes for men or women?
Both. Asad and 9 PM are sold for men, while Assaf and Naseem list Tobacco Jam 50 and Bushra as unisex. Amber itself has no gender, so choose by style rather than by label.
When is the best time to wear amber perfume?
Fall and winter. Resins and vanilla feel comforting in cold air, so most of these shine from October to March in Canada. In summer, choose a fresher amber such as Lattafa Atlas or Safi, our own, and apply lightly.
Do amber perfumes last long?
Amber materials such as labdanum and benzoin sit in the base of a perfume and evaporate slowly, so ambers tend to stay on skin longer than citrus scents. Concentration matters too: our own Qadr and Safi are extraits de parfum with a 10 to 12 hour longevity guarantee.
