We found no Arabian alternative that fragrance communities commonly name for Byredo Gypsy Water, so we matched published notes instead. Lattafa Khamrah Waha shares bergamot, juniper and vanilla. Paris Corner Qissa Blue shares bergamot, lemon, incense and amber. Ard Al Zaafaran Raghba shares incense, sandalwood, amber and vanilla. Safi by Sara Sakina shares bergamot, lemon, amber and vanilla, without the pine or incense.
Key takeaways
Gypsy Water is a woody aromatic fragrance from the Stockholm house Byredo, released in 2008. Its published notes are juniper, lemon, bergamot and pepper on top, pine needles, incense and orris root in the heart, and vanilla, sandalwood and amber in the base (Gypsy Water note list). Read together, those notes describe fresh citrus and juniper, a resinous pine and incense heart, and a soft wood and vanilla base. A good alternative keeps some of the citrus and juniper, or the incense, sandalwood and vanilla.
None of these is a commonly named alternative. Each one shares part of the Gypsy Water note list, and the table shows what it shares and where it differs. Notes follow each house's published lists.
| Perfume | Shared with Gypsy Water | Different | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khamrah Waha by Lattafa | Bergamot, juniper, vanilla, plus iris, the plant orris comes from | Yuzu, ginger, cucumber, sage, sea salt, tonka and musk; no pine, incense or sandalwood | Eau de parfum |
| Qissa Blue by Paris Corner | Bergamot, lemon, incense, amber | Leather, ylang ylang, jasmine, magnolia, saffron and oakmoss; no juniper, pine or vanilla | Eau de parfum |
| Vulcan Baie by French Avenue | Bergamot, incense, sandalwood, amber | Basil, rosemary, blackcurrant, raspberry, patchouli and musk; no juniper, pine or vanilla | Eau de parfum |
| Raghba by Ard Al Zaafaran | Incense, sandalwood, amber, vanilla | Oud and musk; no citrus, juniper or pine listed | Eau de parfum |
| Safi by Sara Sakina | Bergamot, lemon, amber, vanilla | Sicilian orange, Mediterranean fruit and white musk; no juniper, pepper, pine, incense, orris or sandalwood | Extrait de parfum |
Khamrah Waha opens with bergamot and juniper, two of the Gypsy Water top notes, alongside yuzu and ginger. Its heart has iris, the flower whose root gives orris, with cucumber, sage and a sea salt accord. Its base has vanilla, tonka, musk and woods. There is no pine, incense or sandalwood, and the cucumber and sea salt give it a fresher, more aquatic edge. Choose it if the bright juniper opening is what you love most. It is an eau de parfum.
Qissa Blue shares four notes with Gypsy Water: bergamot, lemon and incense on top, and amber in the base. From there it goes in a more floral and leathery direction, with leather, ylang ylang, jasmine, magnolia and patchouli, and saffron and oakmoss underneath. There is no juniper, pine or vanilla. Choose it if you like the contrast of citrus and incense in Gypsy Water and want more florals and leather. It is an eau de parfum.
Vulcan Baie shares bergamot, incense, sandalwood and amber with Gypsy Water. It adds basil and rosemary, which keep it aromatic, plus blackcurrant, raspberry, patchouli and musk. There is no juniper, pine, lemon or vanilla, and the berries add a fruity side that Gypsy Water does not have. Choose it if you want an aromatic, woody scent with incense and a touch of fruit. It is an eau de parfum.
Raghba focuses on the warm end of the Gypsy Water note list. Its published notes include incense, sandalwood, amber and vanilla, which also appear in the Gypsy Water heart and base, along with oud and musk. No citrus, juniper or pine is listed, so it is warmer and woodier from the start. Choose it if your favourite part of Gypsy Water is the incense, sandalwood and vanilla drydown. It is an eau de parfum in a 50 ml bottle.
Safi is our own perfume, so here is exactly where it overlaps. It shares four notes with Gypsy Water: bergamot and lemon on top, and amber and vanilla in the base. It also has Sicilian orange, Mediterranean fruit and white musk. It has no juniper, pepper, pine, incense, orris or sandalwood, so it skips the pine and incense heart of Gypsy Water and is brighter, fruitier and softer. Choose it if you love the citrus and vanilla of Gypsy Water but not the pine and incense. It is an extrait de parfum with our 10 to 12 hour longevity guarantee, and there is a 5 ml tester.
