Rose oud, or oud and roses, is a classic pairing in Arabian perfumery: the rose brings brightness and a soft sweetness, and the oud brings dark, resinous wood underneath. Houses build on it with saffron, amber, vanilla, incense or fruit, so two rose ouds can smell very different. Warm and sweet rose oud
Lattafa Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst is the one to try if you want the rose to lead. Lattafa lists pink pepper and bergamot up top, Turkish rose, Bulgarian rose and jasmine in the heart, and oud, amber and vanilla in the base, so the oud sits under the roses rather than in front of them. Lattafa Bayaan is fruitier and sweeter: litchi, pink pepper and cassis open onto rose, praline and cardamom, with oud, vanilla and moss in the base. Lattafa sells both as unisex.
Dark, spiced and smoky rose oud
Lattafa Oud Mood opens on rose, saffron and pimento, moves into oud, caramel, floral notes and patchouli, and settles on woody notes, amber, resins, incense and musk. The incense and resins give it a smoky, resinous finish that suits cool evenings. Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Woman also opens on rose and saffron, with geranium, then turns spicy through nutmeg, pepper, violet and caraway before settling on patchouli, oud, vanilla and amber. Armaf presents it for women, and the spice and patchouli give it more weight than a soft floral.
Fresh and fruity rose oud
Ard Al Zaafaran Dirham Oud is the budget pick, at CA$24.99 for 50 ml. Fragrantica lists citrus notes, bergamot and raspberry up top, sandalwood, rose and lavender in the heart, and woody notes, oud, amber, white musk and cedar in the base. It opens bright and fruity before the woods come through, so it makes an easy first rose oud and works in spring as well as fall.
Rose oud perfume oil
Nabeel Qisaty is a 20 ml concentrated perfume oil, so you dab it on rather than spray it. Fragrantica lists copaiba balm, ylang-ylang, honey, aldehydes, lavender, anise and orange up top. The heart holds rose, raspberry, jasmine, geranium, coconut and peach with woods such as cedar and guaiac wood, and the base is oud, sandalwood, patchouli, musk and vanilla. A small amount on the wrists and neck is enough, and you can also wear it under a spray.

How to choose a rose oud perfume
- Decide how much oud you want. If you want the rose first, start with Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst. If you want oud, saffron and incense, start with Oud Mood.
- Pick a direction. Litchi, cassis and praline make Bayaan fruity and sweet. Citrus and raspberry keep Dirham Oud fresh. Nutmeg, pepper and caraway make Club de Nuit Intense Woman spicy.
- Choose a spray or an oil. Qisaty is a perfume oil you dab on. The other five are eaux de parfum you spray.

What is rose oud?
Rose oud is the classic Middle Eastern pairing of rose, often Taif rose or another damask rose, with oud, the resin-rich heartwood of the agar tree. The rose adds a bright, soft floral note and the oud adds dark, woody depth, so each balances the other.
What does rose oud smell like?
Most rose ouds open on the rose, bright and slightly sweet, and settle onto the oud, which smells woody, smoky and resinous. Saffron, amber, vanilla, incense or fruit often sit between the two and change the balance. Lattafa Oud Mood leans smoky with incense and resins, Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst is rose-led with amber and vanilla, and Bayaan is fruity and sweet with praline.

Is rose oud good for summer?
Rose oud reads warm and rich, so most of these suit fall and winter evenings. For warm days, choose one where citrus or fruit leads, such as Dirham Oud or Bayaan, and apply lightly.
Which rose oud perfume is the most affordable?
Ard Al Zaafaran Dirham Oud is the lowest-priced pick here, at CA$24.99 for a 50 ml eau de parfum at the time of writing. For a 100 ml bottle, Lattafa Oud Mood is CA$49.99.
Does Lattafa Bade'e Al Oud Sublime contain oud?
Not according to Lattafa. Despite the name, the notes Lattafa lists for Bade'e Al Oud Sublime are apple, litchi and rose over plum and jasmine, with vanilla, moss and patchouli. It is a fruity rose rather than a rose oud. If you want rose and oud from the same line, choose Bade'e Al Oud Amethyst.
